Partitioning allow for easier organization of data by separating system, program and data files. It also allows you to reinstall windows on one partition without deleting the files on the other partition.
Instructions
1. Back up any important data on the hard drive to another drive, CD or other data
storage device. Partitioning and subsequently formatting the drive will erase all data on
it.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD into the computer and restart
it. It should boot from the CD.
If it does not, change your BIOS setting, entering them from the keyboard command stating during startup, to
allow you system to boot from the CD drive.
3. Press "Enter" at the welcome screen and then accept the user agreement. If you are
prompted to repair a previous installation, press "Esc."
4. Use the arrow keys to select the partitions you wish to change or unallocated space
you wish to create partitions in. To change existing partitions, press "D" with the partition selected to delete it
and then confirm that you wish to delete it.
Create a new partition by pressing "C," entering the desired size in megabytes and then pressing "Enter." Repeat this as necessary until you have reached the desired configuration of partitions.
5. Select the partition you want to install Windows XP on and press "Enter." Select the file system you want to be used for the partition. NTFS is the recommended file system for Windows XP.
6. Go through the Windows Setup program as normal to reinstall Windows.
